COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an introduction to basic medical microbiology emphasis on viruses and bacterial mechanism of pathogenesis and host response, how do microbial pathogens modulate host cells to expedite virulence? As well how can microbial pathogens be thwarted and controlled? Moreover, the course will also introduce some of most common microbial diseases and their characteristic. Briefly medical Mycology and parasitology will also be included.
COURSE Objectives and Learning outcomes:
1. To introduce and describe the classification, structure, classification and physiology of human infected viruses and bacteria as well understand the importance of pathogenic bacteria in human disease
2. Summarize the role of the host defense mechanism in infectious disease,
including natural barriers to infection, innate and acquired immune responses to
infection, and inflammation
3. To know the use of antibiotics and resistant mechanisms encoded in bacteria to
neutralize these chemical agents.
4. Introduce some of most common microbial diseases
5. To learn concepts of viruses vaccination
6. To introduce basic concepts in medical mycology and parasitology
